Everywhere you look there’s something with words on it. And you read them automatically...because you can. We challenge you to go 5 minutes without reading. Take and post a picture of what you accidentally read and challenge your friends on social media to do the same.

People can survive without reading. Millions of New Yorkers do every day. But surviving is not thriving. Sure, you can find workarounds for not being able to tell whether something at the grocery store has ingredients you’re allergic to, or which gate your flight is leaving from. But how do you work around a hole in your life you don’t even know exists? What’s the replacement for being transported by a finely crafted novel? Or simply reading your child’s first essay at school?

Literacy has real benefits for adult learners. But don’t take our word for it.
Hear what they have to say and see the difference sharing the literacy makes.

More about
Literacy New York
Literacy New York (LNY) works to create and strengthen literate communities throughout all of New York State and has done so for over 40 years. We provide technical assistance, training, program support, advocacy for adult literacy, and help build the organizational capacity of community-based literacy programs. These local programs, in turn, provide literacy instruction to adults who want to improve their literacy skills.
For more than 40 years, we have served as a vocal advocate for adult literacy at the state and federal level. To this day, we continue to speak out on behalf of this issue. Programs supported by LNY raise literacy levels for thousands of adult learners in New York State through the service of numerous dedicated volunteers.
